About
Bariglobe gastric balloon is a non-surgical, temporary intragastric balloon system for treatment of obesity. The device is intended for assisting weight loss by partially filling the stomach and inducing satiety. It also affects satiety receptors located in the upper stomach and reduces the speed of the food evacuation from the stomach.
Patients can achieve double weight loss with Bariglobe balloon than with just diet and exercise.
This procedure ingrafts healthy habits to limit food intake even after the balloon is removed.
The set for modifications “BARIGLOBE” and “BARIGLOBE EXTENDED” consists of:
- a folded silicone balloon volume 400-700 ml
- a silicone probe for the balloon placement with a silicone sheath
- a metal guide wire to increase the probe hardness
- a PVC tube with plastic connectors for liquid transfusion
- an operation manual
- patient’s information card
- patient’s manual
The dimensions of the main components:
Balloon volume: 400-700 ml.
Probe diameter 6±0,2 mm.
For modifications “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE” and “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE EXTENDED” several more components are added:
- a folded silicone “minor” balloon volume 350-400 ml
- a silicone probe for the “minor” balloon placement with a silicone sheath
- a metal guide wire to increase the probe hardness
- a PVC tube with plastic connectors for liquid transfusion
The dimensions of the main components:
Basic balloon volume: 400-700 ml.; “minor” balloon volume: 350-400 ml
Probe diameter 6±0,2 mm.
What is new about Bariglobe?
— “Bariglobe” is a Russian-made innovative weight loss system. The device is manufactured from biocompatible medical-grade high-quality silicone. That is why the wall of the balloon is absolutely smooth and well tolerated by the patient. The valve maintains the saline inside the balloon throughout all the treatment period.
— “Bariglobe” balloon system is adjustable and more effective comparing to the similar devices on the market. After approximately 2 months since the placement of the basic balloon the additional “minor” balloon (350-400 ml volume) available in modifications “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE” and “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE EXTENDED” can be placed to overcome the “plateu” stage of weight loss and maintain weight loss rate.
— “Bariglobe” can be used for 12 months (modifications “BARIGLOBE EXTENDED” and “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE EXTENDED”).
Procedure
The decision to use the device is made by a physician. The device should be used by patients whose body mass index (BMI) is 27-40 kg/m2. Patients with BMI is more than 40 kg/m2 can be treated with the device for the purpose of preparation for the surgery.
The collapsed balloon is installed under intravenous anesthesia and permanent endoscopic control. Before the procedure, endoscopy should be performed to make sure there are no contraindications – ulcerations, gastric cancer, large hiatal hernia, etc. After that, the balloon is inserted through the mouth and esophagus into the stomach. The balloon is filled with 400-700 ml of saline solution colored with methylene blue. After filling the balloon up with saline solution it forms a ball. The procedure is very simple and usually doesn’t last longer than 15 minutes.
Inside the stomach, the balloon fills its excessive volume, thus less quantity of food is needed to provoke the reaction of the receptors, which signalize about stomach filling. Therefore, the patient feels satiety earlier than usual. In the course of time the patient forms the habit to eat less. Later the patient adjusts to the new nutrition habits and keeps it after the balloon removal.
During the first several days after the balloon placement, patient feels nausea, overfilling of the stomach and unpleasant sensations in epigastria. The level of these feelings is individual and depends on the patient. The presence of extraneous body in the stomach rises the production of gastric acid and irritation of mucous membrane, thus for the prevention of these effects special medicines are intended. In general, after 7-14 days after the balloon placement, patient doesn’t feel the presence of the balloon and can live a usual lifestyle.
The intragastric balloon is installed temporarily. Maximum period of the balloon’s stay in patient’s stomach is 6 months (modifications “BARIGLOBE” and “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE”) or 12 months (modifications “BARIGLOBE EXTENDED” and “BARIGLOBE ADJUSTABLE EXTENDED”), and then the balloon should be removed.
The balloon is removed under general anesthesia and intubation. The balloon is punctured by a special endoscopic needle, deflated and removed through the mouth with the grasper.
Efficiency
According to multiple studies published all over the world, the average excess weight loss is 20-30% which is a perfect result for non-surgical method.
